Born in 1989 in Azerbaijan, lives and works in Baku
Farhad Farzali engages in anthropological research on the Azerbaijan cultural context and the cataloguing of striking forms of neo-folklore. He uses painting, objects, video and sound. He completed an MFA at the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts in Baku in 2012. He participated a large number of group exhibitions around the world. His works figure in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Baku, Azerbaijan National Museum of Fine Arts and Yarat Contemporary Art Space. He is the owner of the music label Geschenk Recordings.
Farzali easily switches between different styles and genres, but one thing stays steady. The culture of his country and the new national identity of independent Azerbaijan appear as a main artist's matter of interest. His homeland located close to Persian, Ottoman and Russian Empires becomes an inspirational kaleidoscope of customs, traditions, and rituals. According to the words of the artist, his country is his only muse, a charming mystery which has to be solved. Farzali accurately examined anthropological samples of his native cultural context, carefully cataloged all forms of the new art, and the archaic elements turning back and actualized to create neofolk artifacts.
